The Birds at My Table: Why We Feed Wild Birds and Why It Matters By Darryl Jones Call Number:  QL 676.5 .J66 2018 (Currently on the New Book Shelf) Publisher's Description:  Darryl Jones is fascinated by bird feeders. Not the containers supplying food to our winged friends, but the people who fill the containers. Why do people do this? Jones asks in   The Birds at My Table . Does the food even benefit the birds? What are the unintended consequences of providing additional food to our winged friends? Jones takes us on a wild flight through the history of bird feeding. He pinpoints the highs and lows of the practice. And he ponders this odd but seriously popular form of interaction between humans and wild animals. Most important, he points out that we know very little about the impact of feeding birds despite millions of people doing it every day. Unerringly, Jones digs at the deeper issues and questions, and he raises our awareness of the things we ...

Student Worker Appreciation

Image
Every year we celebrate our student workers with small appreciation bags for all of their work. They are the people who open and close the Library, perform countless tasks, and help patrons every day for the 100 hours per week the  Library is open. They do all of this while taking full course loads, some working other jobs or doing internships, and always with cheer. The Library would not run without our student workers. Here’s to all of them, and a special big shout out to our Student Managers who are graduating this week: Destiny Walker - Majored in Dance  Ross Nett - Majored in Wildlife Ecology and Biology  Jonathan Turner - Majored in Musical Theatre (minor in Dance)  Dana Fritsch - Majored in Health Science  We will miss them, and we wish them all the success in their next adventures wherever they land.  Thanks to all of you for your hard work!

Demographics and the Demand for Higher Education By Nathan D. Grawe Call Number:  LA 227.4 .G736 2018 More about the book from Inside Higher Ed Publisher's Description:   Higher education faces a looming demographic storm. Decades-long patterns in fertility, migration, and immigration persistently nudge the country toward the Hispanic Southwest. As a result, the Northeast and Midwest—traditional higher education strongholds—expect to lose 5 percent of their college-aged populations between now and the mid-2020s. Furthermore, and in response to the Great Recession, child-bearing has plummeted. In 2026, when the front edge of this birth dearth reaches college campuses, the number of college-aged students will drop almost 15 percent in just 5 years. In  Demographics and the Demand for Higher Education , Nathan D. Grawe has developed the Higher Education Demand Index (HEDI), which relies on data from the 2002 Education Longitudinal Study (ELS) to estimate the pr...
