Interview with Cheyenne - Technical Services Assistant

Learn more about our newest team member, Cheyenne!

A little about my background:

I have always been a reader. When I was in elementary school I wanted to drive a bookmobile when I grew up but I decided to try out teaching instead. I went to UWSP for my undergraduate degree in English education and creative writing. I enjoyed teaching ELA but I also had so many other fun experiences; I coached track and field, organized a free book fair for students, and tutored after school. I realized that I wanted to be more involved in information science and went to UW Madison for my master's degree, which led me back to Stevens Point. I've volunteered with libraries, archives, and museums in the area and was most recently working with the Portage County Historical Society. In all the work that I've done, connecting people with the resources they need to find answers or to achieve a goal has always been a big motivator for me.

Hometown:

I grew up in Hatley, which is east of Wausau. It is a pretty small town and I remember when a library branch finally opened there; we suddenly had a lot more options than what was on the local bookmobile!

One thing I look forward to in this position:

I love that this position lets me help others help others. For example, if I can help a professor get books in course reserves then they can get that information to their students. I still get to be involved but my individual work can positively impact a lot of people at once.

How do I envision contributing:

In many ways I see my role as a switchboard operator. If I pull books for course reserves and find they are damaged, I can get those books to the appropriate person to be fixed. When I find broken website links I can work with our team to get them back up and running. Much of the work I get to do goes beyond my role and beyond even the library, which helps us all build a stronger learning community here at UWSP.

Interesting fact:

My favorite genres are horror and nonfiction. Horror writing has gotten better and better in the last decade and I love how new authors surprise me. Nonfiction is often looked over for fun reading, but I really encourage folks to check it out! Nonfiction books are written by very passionate writers and they can be incredibly interesting.

How do I spend my time outside of work:

I have a lot of hobbies that I bounce between! Right now I like playing board games, Magic the Gathering and some video games like AstroBot. I really need to pick up banjo again but I'm trying to not annoy my neighbors.  I love going to local bluegrass and punk shows when I can.

Any favorite restaurants or hidden gems:

We have a lot of great local restaurants in Stevens Point. Some of my favorites are Bobabes, the Rock and Roll Cafe, and Guus. But I have a deep passion for Taco Bell.
