2021 Children's Literature awards

The American Library Association 2021 Awards for the year's best in children's literature were announced this week.  Visit the IMC to check out these titles, as well as other ALA award winners!

We Are Water Protectors (IMC PZ 7 L66148 We 2020) illustrated by Michaela Goade won the 2021 Caldecott Medal for for the most distinguished American picture book for children.  The book was written by Carole Lindstrom and published by Roaring Brook Press. Inspired by Indigenous-led environmental justice movements, this poetic picture book sounds an urgent cry to safeguard the Earth's water.  

Goade, an enrolled member of the Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, is the first indigenous artist to win the Caldecott award.

When You Trap a Tiger  (IMC PZ 7.1 K418 Whe 2020) written by Tae Keller, is the 2021 Newbery Medal winner for the year's most outstanding contribution to children's literature.  The book is published by Random House Children’s Books.

The story centers around a biracial girl, Lily, whose family moves in with her ailing grandmother. A magical tiger appears, a figure from her grandmother’s Korean folktales, and offers Lily a deal in exchange for restoring her grandmother to health.
