"There's More to the Story:" Celebrate National Library Week (April 23-29)

Every year, we call the third week of April “Everything Week,” because it feels like everything happens to fall on this week. It is National Library Week, Poem in your Pocket Day, Banned Books Panel Discussion, READ Poster Promotion, Library Newsletter release, Library Workers Day, and probably a few more things we may have overlooked.

We are excited though about our upcoming events, and we hope you can join us.

National Library Week began in 1958 and was launched to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians, and library staff play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The theme this year is “There’s More to the Story,” bringing awareness to the other services and programs we offer in addition to books and journals.

Here is a schedule of events and activities recognizing particular aspects of library work and some fun stuff. Please join us in any or all of these events!

  • Monday, April 24: Right to Read Day is a National Day of Action supporting the right to read. The ALA’s State of America's Libraries Report is released, including the Top Ten Most Challenged Books of 2022. Create your own READ poster! It’s easy and fun. Check out how to submit your selfie and be featured on our Library Wall and our social media platforms.
  • Tuesday, April 25: Banned Books Panel will be held at the Portage County Public Library – Pineries Room – 6:15-7:45 p.m. It’s also National Library Workers Day, a day for patrons to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers. How do you show your appreciation for your library staff? Drop them a quick note to say you appreciate the work they do!
  • Wednesday, April 26: National Library Outreach Day (formerly National Bookmobile Day), a day to celebrate library outreach and the dedicated library professionals who are meeting their patrons where they are
  • Thursday, April 27: Poem in your Pocket Day! Stop by the Circulation Desk (CCC 130) or Reference Room (CCC 104) and collect a poem to share with a friend or stranger. Take Action for Libraries Day, a day to rally advocates to support libraries.
  • Friday, April 28: READ poster wall. Stop by the CCC 130 Circulation Area to see your read poster on our wall of fame! Library Newsletter will be released in the upcoming days.
