Let Freedom Read! Celebrate Banned Books Week

The University Libraries joins the national celebration of the freedom to read during Banned Books Week from October 1-7, 2023. This year’s Banned Books Week theme is “Let Freedom Read.”

Launched in 1982, Banned Books Week highlights the freedom to seek and to express ideas and emphasizes the importance of the fight against censorship. After the Supreme Court Case Island Trees School District v. Pico had ruled that schools could not ban books solely because of their content, Banned Books Week began.

Between January 1 and August 31, 2023, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom documented challenges to 1,915 unique titles nationwide. This reflects a 20 percent increase in the number of book challenges recorded during the same reporting period in 2022.

With libraries across the country, the University Libraries will celebrate Banned Books Week with information and book displays including current and historical bans and challenges. Patrons are invited to visit our display (CCC 130 and CCC Lobby), explore our Featured Collection of banned books, and learn more about local and national efforts to combat censorship.
