Legacy Bound: Honoring Prof. Tom Reich's 26 Years at the UWSP Libraries

The stacks will be a bit emptier in the Library as we say goodbye to Prof. Tom Reich, who will be retiring over the summer.

Tom's career with UWSP spans an impressive 26 years, during which he has played an integral role in shaping the library's landscape and fostering a culture of excellence.

Tom's story with the UWSP Libraries began during his undergraduate years when he worked as a student worker. His early involvement eventually evolved into more significant roles, including serving as a graduate assistant to the History Department. Through his dedication to the library's history and collections, Tom transitioned into positions within the Archives and Government Documents.

Tom further pursued his graduate education, earning his second master’s degree in library and information science from UW-Milwaukee. Armed with newfound knowledge and expertise, he was then hired as a faculty librarian at the UWSP Libraries, where he took on the responsibilities of coordinating Collection Development and overseeing Acquisitions and Gifts.

Throughout his tenure, Tom's passion for UWSP and its history is evident, intertwining with his scholarly pursuits, including his acclaimed work on James Albertson, research on foreign relations of the United States, the history of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Wisconsin Higher Education contract in Vietnam, which won him the MAGS Distinguished Thesis award. His dedication to collection development has left an enduring mark on our library, enriching our resources and enhancing the academic experience for all.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tom's deep institutional knowledge, exceptional negotiation skills, and genuine care for students, faculty, and staff have set a standard of excellence that will be difficult to surpass. And Tom's devotion to Bob Dylan wasn't just a collection, it was a 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' journey!

As we bid farewell to Tom, we reflect on his remarkable career and the profound impact he has had on our institution. His unwavering dedication and passion have been a driving force behind our success, and his legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come.

Tom's last day with us will be on August 9, 2024. Please join us in celebrating his achievements and wishing him well in his well-deserved retirement. Thank you, Tom, for your invaluable contributions and the enduring impact you have made on the UWSP Libraries.
