Get to Know Laurie Petri - Collection Development Librarian

Meet Laurie Petri, the new Collection Development Librarian at UWSP. While she may be stepping into this new role, Laurie is no stranger to the University of Wisconsin library community. Learn more about her and her new role.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your background and what brought you to our library?
A: I’ve been involved with libraries since I was in third grade—shelving books. I came to UWSP after many years at UW Colleges, and I feel like this new position is the perfect fit for my interests and experience.

Q: Where is your hometown?
A: I’m from Footville, WI, a quaint little town with a population of about 750, located near Janesville. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Illinois.

Q: What’s one thing you’re looking forward to learning or achieving in your new position?
A: I love hearing from students about their passions and research topics. It really expands my knowledge. I hope to provide them with the books they need for their assignments and maybe recommend a few hidden gems along the way.

Q: How do you envision contributing to our library’s mission and community?
A: I’m a huge proponent of diverse voices and viewpoints. Everyone should be able to see themselves represented in our collections. I also believe in the importance of lifelong learning, welcoming everyone from self-educators to older generations.

Q: What’s a fun fact about the library or its collection that you’ve discovered since starting?
A: I love the wide range of resources we offer. There’s something for every interest, whether you’re a student, researcher, or community member.

Q: What’s one interesting fact about you that might surprise people?
A: I’m a horror fan! From books to movies, graphic novels to video games, I love it all.

Q: How do you like to spend your free time outside of work?
A: I enjoy reading, gardening, and spending time with friends and family.

Q: What’s a skill or hobby you have that you think people might not expect?
A: I love creating art whenever I can.

Q: If you were a book, what genre would you be and why?
A: I’d be a thriller! I love excitement and the detective work involved in solving mysteries—definitely parallels to librarianship.

Q: If you had a superpower that could be useful in the library, what would it be?
A: That’s a tough one! I think I’d choose either omnilingual or a photographic memory. Both would be useful skills to have.

Q: Do you have any favorite local restaurants or hidden gems that you’d recommend?
A: I recently enjoyed Brokogi with my family and topped it off with dessert at King Cone. Of course, you can’t go wrong with the classic Stevens Point tradition—Belts’ ice cream!
