75 Years of Access: UWSP Libraries and the FDLP

On May 11, UWSP Libraries marks 75 years as a member of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).

Established by Congress, the FDLP is a network of libraries across the country dedicated to ensuring free public access to U.S. government information. Through this program, libraries provide access to a wide range of materials from historical and current Congressional publications, statistical data, maps, and federal agency reports.

UWSP joined the program in 1951, becoming part of a national effort grounded in a simple but powerful idea: an informed public is essential to a functioning democracy.

For 75 years, that work has taken many forms, including print collections, microfilm, and now an ever-expanding digital landscape. While formats have changed, the mission has remained the same of making government information accessible, usable, and available to all.

Today, Prof. Yan Liao, Head of Cataloging and Government Publications, helps keep our government publications collection current and accessible for students, staff, and the community. This work has been sustained over decades by many dedicated UWSP librarians and staff who carefully organized, preserved, and stewarded these collections for future generations.

Now in our new home in the Library & Student Resource Center (SRC), we carry that commitment forward. The new space reflects not just a change in building, but a continued investment in access, research support, and community connection.

We look forward to celebrating this anniversary in fall.
