Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend a ceremony this Friday, Sept. 4, recognizing the 2026 Governor’s Award for Archival Innovation for Stevens Point Through the Years, a collaborative project of UWSP Archives and the UWSP GIS Center.
Led by University Archivist Brad Casselberry, Geography Professor Doug
Miskowiak, and Academic and Career Adviser Jarita Bavito, the project brought
together students, faculty, staff, and alumni to transform nearly 60,000
handwritten federal census records from 1900–1940 into an interactive
exploration of Stevens Point’s past. The team transcribed census records,
researched historical addresses, geocoded data, and created interactive GIS
maps that allow users to explore where people lived and worked, trace
immigration and settlement patterns, and see how Stevens Point neighborhoods
changed over four decades.

The ceremony will include the award presentation by representatives of the
Wisconsin Historical Society and brief remarks from the project team. Light
refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
