Poem in your Pocket Day

Image
Poem in Your Pocket Day  was initiated in April 2002 by the Office of the Mayor in New York City, in partnership with the city's Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education. In 2008, the Academy of American Poets took the initiative to all fifty United States, encouraging individuals around the country to participate. The UWSP Libraries has been celebrating this day for several years with local community organizations, Portage County Literacy Council, Portage County Public Library, CREATE Portage County, and THE STORE.  We will miss distributing poems on campus today, and throughout the community. However, there are virtual ways to celebrate the day.  Select a  poem   and share it on social media using the hashtag # pocket poem.  Share one of the audio or video poems on the  UWSP Libraries' Guide   Print a   poem   from the  Poem   in   Your   Pocket   Day  PDF  and draw an image from the   poem   in   the white space, or use the   in structions on pages 59-60 of

Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast By Natasha Trethewey Celebrate National Poetry Month with this ebook from the Libraries' collection! Read a review from Orion Magazine Publisher's Description :   Beyond Katrina is poet Natasha Trethewey's very personal profile of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and of the people there whose lives were forever changed by hurricane Katrina. Trethewey spent her childhood in Gulfport, where much of her mother's extended family, including her younger brother, still lives. As she worked to understand the devastation that followed the hurricane, Trethewey found inspiration in Robert Penn Warren's book Segregation: The Inner Conflict in the South, in which he spoke with southerners about race in the wake of the Brown decision, capturing an event of wide impact from multiple points of view.  Weaving her own memories with the experiences of family, friends, and neighbors, Trethewey traces the erosion of local

UWSP Librarians Are Here To Help

Yan as illustrated by her husband In these strange times, as we adapt to figuring out ways of moving forward, we want you to know the UWSP Librarians are here to help you. To alleviate any stress, we have been working on several ways to highlight resources that you can access remotely and are promoting our remote reference service to ASK US questions when they arise. Troy and Evie Remoting :-) Librarians and staff are working remotely and are available to answer your research questions or to provide help with using online resources. The librarians have also created many Research Guides that are helpful for instruction, background information, and general subject guides. These guides will navigate students to the best resources related to your class.
