Celebrate Open Access Week

Image
Please join us, and libraries around the world, as we celebrate Open Access Week.    The 2021 theme for Open Access Week is “It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity.” Open access is the free, immediate online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and reuse those results as needed. Open access has the power to transform how research and scientific inquiry are conducted. Open access is especially critical now as many countries around the world continue to face varying levels of disruption due to COVID-19.  The purpose of this week is to highlight opportunities for higher education and the research community to learn about and discuss the potential benefits of open access. It is also a week to think more about how to build better research practices through open access journals and repositories, and to work toward a more fair and equitable system. The UW System offers MINDS@UW, an  institutional repository that collects, preserves, and share

Banned Books Week: Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.

Image
The end of September is when libraries across the country celebrate Banned Books Week.  Launched in 1982, the celebration of banned books was created to value the free and open exchange of ideas and access to information for all.  This year's theme is "Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us." Please join the UWSP Libraries in celebrating this week by participating in all kinds of ways.  1) Take a look at our display in the main campus library (Albertson Hall) on Banned Books. 2) Read a passage from a banned book to a friend, colleague, or anyone where you would like to discuss censorship. 3) Post one of the top 10 challenged books on your social media page to bring awareness to books that are challenged and how to stand up to censorship.    The Top 10 Challenged Books of 2020 are: George  by Alex Gino.  Challenged, banned, and restricted for LGBTQIA+ content, conflicting with a religious viewpoint, and not reflecting “the values of our community.” Stamped: Racism, Antiraci

Prof. Terri Muraski Retires

Image
The stacks will be a bit emptier in the Library as we say good-bye to Prof. Terri Muraski who will be retiring this September. Terri began her career here in 2003 as the Access Services librarian and she eventually moved into the role of Information Systems Librarian. Prior to coming here, she was a librarian at UW Stout, and she also worked as a librarian in the K-12 system in Wausau. Terri has dedicated 18 years of service to UWSP and has been instrumental in the operations of the Libraries that faculty, staff, and students use daily anytime they are searching for books, articles, videos, and other materials. She has also been a key contributor to the work she has done for the UW System and the Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries. As one colleague said, “Terri is a problem solver. This is not a skill everyone has, especially when it comes to the complexity of Systems.” We appreciate the unique gifts and talent she has so generously shared with the Libraries, the campus, and
